School events bring learning to life and help shape our school culture. They help students build confidence, connect with others and celebrate their progress. Events also give families a chance to be involved in school life and share in their child’s achievements.

Our school community came together to create a true symphony of stories!

From inspiring author visits and a colourful dress-up street parade to community book hunts and spectacular book-themed door displays, Book Week 2026 was a celebration of stories in every corner of our community.

Author Visits

Primary students had another visit from Barbie Robinson but this time to speak about her latest book Buster and Goo: The Case of Missing Minerva. Barbie read the first chapter and discussed the ideas behind the story. We were extremely lucky to also have the illustrator of this novel, Akka Ballenger, join us. She ran a short workshop around characterisation through visual representations. Everyone really enjoyed creating and drawing their own character using Akka's advice and guidance.

Infants students were visited by author, Jessica Smeltink who read her published book, Big Blue and the Bossy Arm. Students answered questions about the different emotional parts of Big Blue and completed a writing activity. Students also practised the butterfly hug when feeling big emotions and some growth mindset sayings. What a fun, relevant and imaginative afternoon it was, thank you Miss Jess for visiting. We were very lucky to showcase the talents of Emma Webb to our students by offering a lunch club reading and drawing class to YPS students. Emma read pages of her book, Y is For Yass Public School, and assisted students in creating the illustrations of her book through a guided drawing activity.

Community Street Parade

On Friday 28^th August, YPS along with many other schools and centres in the Yass Valley took to the streets for the annual book parade. What a joy filled morning it was for both staff and students, showcasing creative and imaginative costumes representing their chosen book character. Each class teacher chose a ‘best dressed’ character, although the effort and thought of each child’s costume made it VERY hard to choose. Well done YPS on a phenomenal book parade!

Door Displays

Our classrooms came alive with creativity as all staff and students chose a favourite book to bring to life through their very own door display. Staff and students worked together to transform entrances into colourful and imaginative scenes, showcasing their chosen stories and characters. The displays added a wonderful splash of Book Week magic throughout the school and celebrated the creativity and love of reading within each class. Special mentions to all the staff of YPS for getting involved and decorating the door to their space. You were a big part of making the week so fun.

Congratulations to 1/2S and Miss Wales for winning the school Book Week door display!! The amount of detail, thought, team work and creativity shows in the amazing door display you've all created. The door display was inspired by The Black Book of Colours by Menena Cottin which shows you how to 'see' without your eyes. It was a book studied by students in a literacy unit last semester. Students wrote their name in braille and wrote about what each colour smells like, tastes like and feels like. Visiting authors judged all the doors and voted 1/2S as the best door display for its uniqueness. 1/2S enjoyed a reward of a zooper dooper and novelty pen each. Well done Miss Wales and 1/2S!

Community Book Hunt

What a fantastic Community Book Hunt! This year, 10 books were hidden in 10 shopfronts along Comur Street, and we had our biggest number of participants yet! A huge congratulations to all our clever book hunters, especially our school student winners and community winners, who were announced on our YPS P&C facebook page. Thank you to everyone who joined in and helped make the hunt such a wonderful Book Week tradition!
